Strange Adventures #4 Review

Not So Terrific

Writer: Tom King
Artist: Mitch Gerads, Evan Shaner
Cover Price: $4.99
Release Date: August 5, 2020

Tom King is at it again.  Like Mister Miracle, this book is hard to review as a single issue since King likes to play around with what is real, what is false, and all the space in-between.  However, reviews need to happen, so how is this month's Strange Adventure?  Let's find out...

The issue opens with a flashback on Rann as Adam Strange leads an attack on the Pyktts as we see Mister Terrific arrive on Rann in the present.  Things immediately feel off for Holt when Sardath is not there to meet him as planned.  That's just the start of the problems for the man who preaches Fair Play!  I liked the beginning of the issue, and as long as we stay with Michael, I am good going through this issue.

When we aren't with Mister Terrific, we get more flashbacks of Adam trying to convince Hal Jordan to give him a lift to Raan, then trying the same with Superman and then finally getting a Zeta Beam, but is it too late?  With what's going on with Michael, these parts feel like filler.

What is going on with Mister Terrific?  He is looking into things he isn't supposed to looking into, and it's evident that there is a big cover-up going on.  It seems like it goes all the way to the top, but I'm not convinced that Adam is privy to it.  I won't say the same about Alanna, though.

While I have no idea how Michael got back to earth after the shit that went down on Rann, I am finally on board a bit with this book.  I am not loving it, and won't call it a classic like some have already done, but I am interested in the story and look forward to the next issue.

Bits and Pieces:

Strange Adventures #4 is the issue that has finally made me take an interest in this series.  I have liked the art of Gerads and Shaner from the beginning, and Tom King has caught up with them with a large amount of political intrigue.  We still have a long way before it's over, but I am finally enjoying the ride.

7.9/10
